SRINAGAR, Jan 29: The higher elevations of the Kashmir Valley, including well-known tourist spots like Gulmarg and Pahalgam, have received light snowfall, while some low-lying areas experienced rainfall, according to officials.

Meteorological Centre forecasts more wet weather in the upcoming days.

The ski resort of Gulmarg in northern Kashmir saw 2.5 cm of snowfall accompanied by 3.8 mm of rainfall. Similarly, Pahalgam in southern Kashmir recorded 2.7 cm of snowfall and 1.8 mm of rainfall overnight, as reported by the MeT office.

Sonamarg in Central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district and its mountainous passages were also covered in snow, creating a picturesque winter landscape for visitors. Additionally, the higher elevations of Kupwara district in northern Kashmir received light snow, while the plains faced rainfall.

Meanwhile, the 40-day-long harshest winter phase known locally as “Chillai Kalan” is set to conclude tonight. This traditionally cold period, typically associated with heavy snowfall, was comparatively dry this year, with only two short snowfalls recorded.

The MeT office noted that the weather will generally remain cloudy with the likelihood of light to moderate rain, snow, and thunderstorms on Thursday.

A dry and cloudy pattern is expected to persist with light rain and snow possible over isolated areas on Friday, followed by another widespread spell of rain and snow anticipated on Saturday, as per the MeT office.

Wet conditions are forecasted to continue until February 4, with widespread rain and snow expected across Jammu and Kashmir on February 3.

In related news, night temperatures have dipped at various weather stations following snowfall in the higher Kashmir valley.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar decreased slightly to -1.5°C on the night of Wednesday to Thursday, down from 1.9°C recorded the previous night and 0.6°C below the normal for the region.

The day’s temperature in Srinagar reached 5.8°C, surpassing the normal of 7.9°C.

In Pahalgam, the minimum temperature fell to -3.4°C compared to -0.8°C the previous night, while Gulmarg’s readings dropped to -6.5°C from -2.5°C the night before. (Agencies)
