JAMMU, Jan 21: In the lead-up to Republic Day, a gangster was fatally shot in broad daylight by unknown assailants in the Jewel Chowk area today.
Sumit Jandial (37) alias Gataru, son of Om Parkash from Ward number 9, Vijaypur, was driving a Thar SUV when some unidentified attackers stopped his vehicle at Jewel Chowk and opened fire on him, leaving him severely injured and bleeding on the ground.

After the crime was committed, the attackers escaped the scene on scooters.
On receiving the alert, a police team quickly reached the location and transported the injured to Government Medical College Jammu, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
Subsequently, senior police officials, including ADGP Jammu Anand Jain and DIG JSK Range, Shiv Kumar Sharma, visited the site.
In a statement to the media, ADGP Jammu, Anand Jain, described the incident as “normal.”
He noted that the deceased, Sumit Jandial, was a gangster linked to the Gataru gang and was killed due to an old feud with another group.

ADGP Jammu further informed the media that special teams have been formed to apprehend the attackers.
He also dismissed the possibility of a terror motive behind the shooting.
DIG JSK Range, Shiv Kumar Sharma, assured the media that both the attackers and the scooters used to flee had been identified, promising that those responsible would soon be arrested.
“We’ve identified the assailants and their scooters. The unidentified gunmen will be apprehended and brought to justice shortly,” he stated.
He too refrained from revealing the identities of the assailants.
Meanwhile, a case has been filed under the applicable sections of the law at Police Station Nowabad, and an investigation is underway.
