Gorakhpur (UP), Dec 8: Gorakhpur is gearing up to establish the nation’s first Integrated Waste Management City-cum-Learning Centre, with a target completion date set for September 2025. This initiative aims to create a garbage-free environment in the city while enhancing sustainable waste management through a circular economy approach.
Covering an area of 40 acres in Suthni village, Sahjanwa, the project is expected to manage various waste types and produce both charcoal and Bio-CNG, according to Gorakhpur Municipal Commissioner Gaurav Sogarwal.
This initiative is projected to generate jobs, increase revenue, and act as a center for technical training, he added.
Sogarwal highlighted that he has presented this model in Vishakhapatnam and Delhi, and it will also be featured by the Ministry of Environment during the National Chief Secretaries’ Conference in Delhi from December 13 to 15.
The project is receiving innovative input from the Administrative Staff College of India in Hyderabad, he noted.
The centre will handle a diverse range of waste types, including biomedical, e-waste, batteries, tires, terracotta, vehicle scrap, plastics, domestic hazardous waste, industrial waste, and organic matter, the municipal commissioner explained.
Additionally, it will function as a learning center, providing necessary technical expertise.
Sogarwal outlined plans for three specialized plants: a Dry Waste Plant with a capacity of 500 tons per day, which will produce charcoal; a Wet Waste Plant with a capacity of 200 tons per day generating Bio-CNG under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model—projected to save the GMC about Rs 12-15 crore monthly on fuel costs; and a Hazardous Waste Plant dedicated to processing domestic hazardous waste in an environmentally-friendly manner.
The project aims not only to address Gorakhpur’s waste management needs but also to support eight neighboring urban local bodies (ULBs), representing a significant move towards regional sustainability, he stated. (PTI)
