Bhopal, Feb 9: On Sunday, Union minister Manohar Lal Khattar stated that the government acknowledges the “concerns expressed by everyone” regarding the way illegal Indian immigrants were recently deported from the US.
There has been significant outcry regarding the deportation of these immigrants, as they were transported in handcuffs during their 40-hour journey on a military aircraft.
The US military plane carrying 104 illegal Indian immigrants arrived in Amritsar on February 5.
On Friday, India conveyed its objections to the US regarding the shackling of deported individuals, emphasizing that such treatment could have been avoided.
Khattar remarked, “The US has deported individuals (to India) previously as well. This time, the method faced objections, which have been noted, and the matter will be addressed through dialogue. This issue does not reflect well on any country, and the government will deliberate further after careful consideration.” He also noted the ongoing demand for the deportation of illegal immigrants.
“There are protocols for deportation, and it requires a level of sensitivity regarding the timing, method, and manner of execution,” he explained.
During the press conference, when questioned about why illegal migrants from neighboring Bangladesh, who are perceived as an economic burden on India, are not being sent back if the US can deport individuals, Khattar acknowledged the seriousness of the situation and stressed that people should not migrate illegally.
“Regardless of whether it is our citizens or those from other countries, all nations engage in deportation when such issues arise. We have also handled deportations from Assam,” he added.
At the same press event, Khattar shared highlights from the recently presented General Budget for 2025-26 by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. (Agencies)
