NEW DELHI, Feb 6: The government has confirmed in the Rajya Sabha on Thursday that there are currently no plans to increase the salaries and allowances of Supreme Court and High Court judges.
The last adjustment to their salaries, allowances, and pensions occurred in 2017.
“At this time, the Government is not considering any proposals to enhance the pay, allowances, and pensions for judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts,” Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal stated in a written response.
He noted that the salaries, allowances, and pensions of judges from the Supreme Court and the 25 High Courts are regulated by The Supreme Court Judges (Salaries and Conditions of Service) Act, 1958 and The High Court Judges (Salary and Conditions of Services) Act, 1954, respectively.
The remuneration, pensions, and allowances for judges of the higher courts were last updated effective from January 1, 2016, following the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission recommendations by the government, through amendments to both laws.
The Chief Justice of India (CJI) receives Rs 2.80 lakh per month, while Supreme Court judges and High Court Chief Justices receive Rs 2.50 lakh monthly.
Judges of the High Courts are compensated with Rs 2.25 lakh per month. The government has also recently announced plans to establish an 8th Pay Commission. (Agencies)
