New Delhi, Jan 12: A community welfare organization based in Haridwar is set to host a series of seven lectures on varying topics, including the controversial issue of simultaneous elections, at its camp during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj, starting January 18.
The first lecture is scheduled for January 18, a day prior to the mega festival, which will continue until February 26 in Prayagraj.
“We will conduct a total of seven lectures at our camp, beginning with one celebrating Swami Vivekananda’s birth anniversary on January 12. The lecture for January 18 is titled ‘One Nation, One Election – Aarthik Rajnaitik Sudhar Evam Viksit Bharat ke Sandarbh Mein’,” an official from the Divya Prem Seva Mission stated in a conversation with PTI.
The official noted that an invitation has been extended to former President Ram Nath Kovind, requesting his attendance and participation in delivering the January 18 lecture.
Earlier in September 2023, a high-level committee led by Kovind was formed to examine and provide recommendations on the feasibility of conducting simultaneous elections for the Lok Sabha, state assemblies, municipalities, and panchayats.
The first session of a parliamentary group reviewing two bills for simultaneous elections took place on January 8, during which opposition members criticized the proposal, labeling it as an infringement on constitutional principles and federalism, while BJP members endorsed it as representative of public sentiment.
The Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill were introduced in the Lok Sabha during the recent Winter Session and sent to the Joint Parliamentary Committee for evaluation.
As per the Divya Prem Seva Mission official, the lecture series will kick off on January 12, focusing on the topic ‘Swami Vivekananda — Sanatan Dharm ki Vaishvik Drishti’.
“The second lecture is scheduled for January 17, titled ‘Bharat ki Gaurav Gatha banam Atmahinta ki Bhavna’. The third session on January 18 will center on ‘One Nation, One Election’, followed by four additional lectures, with the last one taking place on February 6,” the official elaborated.
The remaining lecture topics will cover global terrorism, challenges to India’s integrity, gender equality and women’s empowerment in the Indian context, and the notions of privacy and safety on social media as seen by the youth.
Established 29 years ago, Divya Prem Seva Mission is a philanthropic organization that has partaken in all Kumbh Mela events since 2001, according to the official.
“Our journey began with providing care for lepers, who are often ostracized by their families. Sadly, leprosy patients still experience social exclusion, and our Vande Mataram Kunj in Haridwar serves as a caring center for them,” the official added.
The mission is actively raising awareness about the discrimination faced by this marginalized group during the ongoing camp in Prayagraj.
“We will showcase a video at our camp detailing our work, especially over the past three decades, highlighting the support we provide to those affected by leprosy, and addressing the societal prejudice they and their families endure,” the official mentioned.
