LOS ANGELES, Dec 20: The American premium cable network HBO has announced a second season for “Dune: Prophecy,” the prequel series to Denis Villeneuve’s acclaimed “Dune” films.

Featuring Bollywood star Tabu in a significant role, this six-episode series takes place 10,000 years before the storyline of Frank Herbert’s iconic novel “Dune,” which Villeneuve recently adapted into two parts.

The renewal for season two comes just before the airing of the final episode, set to premiere on HBO on December 22. The series is available for streaming on JioCinema in India.

“‘Dune: Prophecy’ has entranced viewers worldwide, thanks to the visionary direction of showrunner and executive producer Alison Schapker, who will continue to lead this epic narrative of truth and ambition.

“We are extremely thankful to our partners at Legendary and our remarkable cast and crew for their dedication to the Imperium. We eagerly look forward to collaborating with this team again to explore what lies ahead,” said Sarah Aubrey, Head of Max Original Programming, in a statement.

“Dune: Prophecy” promises a compelling story rich with intrigue and power dynamics within the “Dune” universe.

The show showcases a stellar cast including Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Josh Heuston, Chloe Lea, Jade Anouka, Faoileann Cunningham, Edward Davis, Aoife Hinds, Chris Mason, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Camilla Beeput, Jihae, Charithra Chandran, Jessica Barden, Emma Canning, and Yerin Ha.

The official logline indicates that the series follows two Harkonnen sisters as they confront the forces threatening humanity’s future and lay the groundwork for the legendary sect known as the Bene Gesserit.

“Dune: Prophecy” is inspired by the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J Anderson.

In the series, Tabu portrays Sister Francesca, a character characterized as “strong, intelligent, and captivating,” whose presence leaves a significant impact.

“Once a significant love of the Emperor, her return to the palace disrupts the power dynamics in the capital,” the character description elaborates.

Alison Schapker serves as the showrunner and executive producer, alongside Diane Ademu-John, who co-developed the series. It is jointly produced by HBO and Legendary Television. (PTI)
