Jammu, January 25: Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, participated in the 15th National Voters’ Day celebrations on Saturday, emphasizing that the substantial voter turnout in last year’s Lok Sabha and assembly elections showcases the people’s strong belief in democratic principles.
Sinha commended the Chief Electoral Officer of J-K and his team for securing the ‘Best Performing State/UT Award’ from the Election Commission of India.
He expressed sincere appreciation to the people of J-K, along with the officials from the National Election Commission, Election department, police, security forces, and all stakeholders for the fair and successful conduct of the Lok Sabha and J-K Legislative Assembly elections last year.
“The historic voter turnout in both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections reflects the unwavering faith of the people of J-K in democratic values and signifies a resurgence in civic engagement, heralding a new era where democracy is deeply rooted and driven by the will of the people,” the Lt Governor stated at the event.
Highlighting the crucial role of the Election Commission of India (ECI), Sinha noted that their meticulous planning and oversight ensured the elections in J-K proceeded smoothly without any repolls.
He added that all political parties unanimously agreed that the elections held in Jammu and Kashmir were the most fair, transparent, and peaceful to date.
“Our cultural ethos emphasizes the democratic values of freedom, equality, and inclusiveness, offering citizens the opportunity to lead a dignified life. The will of the people is a time-honored concept in our nation, which is why India is rightfully called the ‘Mother of Democracy’,” Sinha remarked.
He pointed out that this year’s National Voters’ Day theme, ‘Nothing Like Voting, I Vote for Sure’, underscores the significance of every vote, emphasizing that voting transcends all boundaries and reflects the essence of voting rights.
“Indian democracy is a celebration of cooperation, peace, and collective strength of the people. India stands as one of the few nations where democratic ideals are most cherished and upheld,” he affirmed.
“I take pride in the fact that today, many nations from both the Global North and South are looking to India for lessons in conducting fair and transparent elections,” the Lt Governor added.
Sinha recognized the Chief Electoral Office’s efforts in successfully revising the electoral rolls following delimitation and preparing a voter list of 8.9 million, ensuring transparent and fair voting across all 11,838 polling stations.
He mentioned that the notable increase in voter turnout during these elections serves as a testament to the commitment and hard work of the region’s election machinery.
The Lt Governor stressed the need for continued awareness campaigns to empower all segments of society about the importance of their vote.
He emphasized that the primary aim of National Voters’ Day celebrations is to encourage eligible youth to engage in the voting process.
Sinha also congratulated the Deputy Commissioner of Doda, Harvinder Singh, and SSP Pulwama, P D Nitya, for being recognized for best electoral practices.
During the event, Sinha led officials and attendees in taking the National Voters’ Day pledge.
Additionally, he introduced a mobile initiative called “Democracy on Wheels”, designed to educate students about the importance of voting and the electoral process.
