Home Minister Amit Shah Expected to Assess J&K Situation on Thursday

NEW DELHI, Dec 18: On Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah is expected to hold a meeting to assess the security landscape in Jammu and Kashmir, marking the first such evaluation since the assembly elections took place in September-October, according to sources.
The meeting will include Jammu and Kashmir’s Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, top officials from the Army, paramilitary forces, JK administration, intelligence agencies, and the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
“The home minister will review the security conditions in Jammu and Kashmir. He will receive updates on the current state of affairs in the Union Territory (UT) and along the border areas,” sources stated.
This meeting will be Shah’s first following the assembly elections in the UT, where Omar Abdullah leads a National Conference (NC) government.
Since the abrogation of Article 370 and the division of the previous state into two UTs in 2019, the central government has directly overseen law and order.
During the meeting, the home minister is likely to engage in an in-depth discussion regarding the security plan leading up to 2025, as per sources.
Jammu and Kashmir has continued to experience sporadic incidents of violence. For instance, on October 20, seven individuals lost their lives in a terror attack in central Kashmir, while prior instances involved attacks on workers from outside the region.
The meeting aims to evaluate recent terrorist incidents and strategize possible measures to prevent such attacks in the future, sources have indicated.
As per official statistics, 142 terrorists were neutralized in Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, with approximately 45 killed so far this year.
In terms of civilian casualties, fifty individuals were killed in 2019, but the number had decreased to 14 by the beginning of November this year.
