LAUSANNE, Jan 21: Jay Shah, the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC), recently met with International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach in anticipation of the Extraordinary IOC Session taking place in Lausanne on January 30. This meeting is part of ongoing efforts to prioritize cricket’s inclusion in the Summer Olympics beyond the 2028 Games.
The ICC shared photos from their meeting on social media, stating, “Momentum continues to build around cricket’s inclusion as an @Olympics sport at the @LA2028 Games and beyond, with ICC Chair Mr. Jay Shah meeting IOC President Mr. Thomas Bach this week in Lausanne, Switzerland.” Shah, who was appointed as ICC chairman in December 2022, has been actively advocating for cricket’s presence in the Olympics.
Last month, during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Brisbane, Shah met with Cindy Hook, the head of the 2032 Brisbane Olympic Organizing Committee, and Cricket Australia CEO Nick Hockley to discuss including cricket in the 2032 Olympic Games. Cricket is set to make its Olympic comeback after 128 years at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, although its inclusion in the 2032 edition has yet to be confirmed.
The T20 format of cricket was confirmed for the 2028 Games during the 141st IOC Session held in Mumbai in 2023. Cricket last appeared in the Olympics during the 1900 Paris Games. (Agencies)
