JAMMU, Jan 30: Sakeena Itoo, the Minister for Health and Medical Education, Social Welfare, and Education, today urged Deputy Commissioners to pinpoint vulnerable groups in their districts and carry out regular testing to facilitate early detection of Tuberculosis (TB).
These directives were shared during a high-level meeting focused on reviewing the progress of the 100-Day Tuberculosis Elimination Campaign across Jammu and Kashmir.
The Minister emphasized the importance of intensified testing and early detection efforts, particularly in Gold Zone districts, to help them achieve TB-free status. She instructed health officials and district administrators to increase screening frequency, launch aggressive outreach programs, and enhance community engagement to effectively manage the spread of the disease. “Engage with PRIs, ULBs, and local religious leaders, as they have the greatest access to remote areas,” Sakeena stated.
The Minister also advocated for the identification of vulnerable groups in all districts, regardless of their TB-free status, and stressed the need for regular screenings in declared TB-free areas to prevent any resurgence of the disease. “Ongoing testing and proactive surveillance are crucial for avoiding re-emergence and ensuring sustained elimination success,” she affirmed.
She called upon officials, especially the Directors of Health Services, to remain vigilant, conduct routine screenings, and interact with high-risk populations to facilitate early detection of undiagnosed cases.
As part of the review on various facets of the 100-Day TB Elimination Campaign, Sakeena Itoo proposed the deployment of mobile testing vans for door-to-door TB screenings in remote areas. “Strengthening diagnostic infrastructure at the grassroots level is essential for maintaining a healthy community,” she remarked.
The Minister urged for enhanced collaboration between district TB officers, ASHA workers, Anganwadi workers, local health units, NGOs, and Mohalla Committees to bolster participation in TB prevention initiatives.
She also called for comprehensive awareness programs in partnership with schools, colleges, and local self-help groups to educate the public about TB symptoms and preventive tactics.
During the meeting, the MD of NHM presented a detailed update on the progress of the 100-Day TB Elimination Campaign across Jammu and Kashmir, mentioning how the initiative aligns with the Union Government’s goal of achieving a TB-free India by 2025 by accelerating TB detection, treatment, and eradication efforts nationwide.
The Minister further assessed the actions taken by district administrations and health departments in combating the drug menace in Jammu and Kashmir. She urged the Deputy Commissioners to collaborate with law enforcement for maximum deterrence against this peril, which threatens the future of the youth.
She requested the formation of inspection squads in collaboration with colleges and higher educational institutions to conduct regular surprise inspections. “Eradicating drug issues necessitates a collaborative approach that includes government bodies, healthcare providers, and the public. We must work together to ensure our society is free from this issue,” she emphasized.
Sakeena reaffirmed that the Omar Abdullah-led government is dedicated to protecting the health and wellness of its citizens. “By addressing both the roots and consequences of drug abuse, the government aims to cultivate a healthier and more prosperous future for Jammu and Kashmir,” she said.
The Minister also urged all Deputy Commissioners to facilitate the rehabilitation of drug abuse victims by providing them with skill and self-employment training during their stay at de-addiction centers, ensuring they have job opportunities post-rehabilitation. She called for the improvement of infrastructure in their respective districts to effectively tackle this issue.
Present at the meeting were Secretary of Health and Medical Education, Dr. Syed Abid Rasheed Shah; Mission Director of National Health Mission; all District Deputy Commissioners; Director Finance of Health and Medical Education; Directors of Health Services for Jammu/Kashmir; Directors of New Medical Colleges Coordination; Principals of all Government Medical Colleges; CMOs of all districts; and other relevant officials, either in person or via video conferencing.
