New Delhi, Feb 25: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized the urgent necessity for a revamped multilateral system that mirrors modern global realities. He noted that recent years have revealed the significant shortcomings of existing frameworks.
Speaking at the 58th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva via a virtual platform, he reiterated India’s unwavering stance on “zero tolerance” towards terrorism and condemned any attempts to normalize its existence.
Addressing geopolitical upheavals, Jaishankar pointed out that the world remains entrenched in conflict and is becoming increasingly divided, unstable, and uncertain in the face of emerging challenges.
“There is a pressing need for a multilateral system that is in tune with today’s global realities, one that is adequately equipped to tackle contemporary challenges and truly serves its purpose,” he stated.
“The inadequacies of current multilateral structures have been laid bare in the past few years. They fell short when the world needed them the most,” he added.
Highlighting India’s proactive role in promoting and protecting human rights globally, Jaishankar remarked, “Our approach has focused on enhancing capacity and fortifying human resources and infrastructure in line with our partners’ priorities, while always adhering to the principles of fiscal responsibility, transparency, and sustainability.”
He further noted that India’s global development partnerships are a testament to this commitment. “Simultaneously, we have remained resolute in our fight against terrorism. India will firmly advocate for zero tolerance towards terrorism and will denounce any actions aimed at normalizing it,” he asserted.
“We don’t just speak of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — the world is one family; we embody it. This perspective is needed more urgently today than ever,” he affirmed.
“As the world grapples with ongoing conflicts and crises, it grows ever more fractured, uncertain, and unstable while attempting to recover from recent ones,” he added.
The External Affairs Minister concluded by stating that India stands ready to contribute to and lead reform efforts. “I reaffirm India’s unwavering commitment to the global promotion and protection of human rights, ensuring their full realization for all,” he declared. (Agencies)
