Jodhpur, Dec 9: Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Sunday that India is set to establish a comprehensive anti-drone unit to protect its borders, as the threat posed by unmanned aerial vehicles is expected to escalate soon.
Speaking to BSF personnel at the 60th Raising Day celebration of the force at its training facility, approximately 300 km from the India-Pakistan border, Shah remarked that the preliminary results from a “laser equipped anti-drone gun-mounted” system have been promising.
He noted that this has resulted in an increase in drone detection and neutralization from 3 percent to 55 percent along the India-Pakistan border in Punjab.
“The danger from drones is likely to intensify in the days ahead… We are addressing this challenge with a ‘whole of government’ strategy, collaborating with defense and research organizations and the DRDO.
“We plan to create a comprehensive anti-drone unit in the near future,” Shah added.
Official statistics reveal that over 260 drones have either been shot down or retrieved from India’s border with Pakistan this year, compared to about 110 in 2023.
The majority of these drone interceptions involving arms and narcotics have occurred in Punjab, with significantly fewer in Rajasthan and Jammu. (Agencies)
