NEW DELHI, Feb 25: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar emphasized the urgent necessity for a revamped multilateral system that mirrors current global realities, highlighting that recent years have “exposed” the significant shortcomings of existing frameworks.
In a virtual address during the 58th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, he reiterated India’s commitment to a policy of “zero tolerance” towards terrorism, denouncing any attempts to legitimize it.
Addressing ongoing geopolitical challenges, Jaishankar remarked that the world is increasingly fraught with conflicts, becoming more fragmented, uncertain, and unstable due to emerging issues.
“We need a new multilateral system that accurately reflects contemporary global dynamics—a system that is better equipped to address modern challenges and truly serves its purpose,” he stated.
“Recent years have highlighted the glaring inadequacies of current multilateral institutions. When the world required their support the most, they were found lacking,” he added.
Jaishankar affirmed India’s proactive role in advancing and safeguarding human rights globally.
“Our approach focuses on capacity building and enhancing human resources and infrastructure in line with our partners’ priorities—while always maintaining principles of fiscal responsibility, transparency, and sustainability,” he noted.
He highlighted that India’s development partnerships worldwide reflect this dedication.
“Simultaneously, we remain resolute in our fight against terrorism. India will consistently promote zero tolerance for terrorism and reject any attempts to normalize it,” he stated.
“We don’t just talk about Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world as one family; we embody it. This perspective is more critical now than ever,” he asserted.
“As the world faces ongoing conflicts and crises, growing more divided and uncertain amid emerging challenges, recovery from recent turmoil remains a struggle,” he further remarked.
The External Affairs Minister concluded by reaffirming India’s unwavering commitment to the global promotion and protection of human rights, ensuring their realization for all. (PTI)
