MUMBAI, Dec 22: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized that India will not allow anyone to dictate its choices and will act in its national interest and for global welfare without succumbing to pressure to conform.
In a video address for an event, he remarked that as India becomes more recognized on the global stage, the implications are significant.
He noted that in a world facing unhealthy habits, stressful lifestyles, and recurring climate challenges, there is much to learn from India’s rich heritage. However, this wisdom can only be realized if Indians take pride in it.
Jaishankar stressed the need for a harmonious coexistence of technology and tradition in today’s globalized world.
“India will certainly progress, but it must do so while preserving its core values. Only then can we truly position ourselves as a prominent nation in a multi-polar world,” he stated.
He was awarded the 27th SIES Sri Chandrasekarendra Saraswati National Eminence Award, which honors achievements in various domains including Public Leadership, Community Leadership, Human Endeavor, Science and Technology, and Social Leadership, with a focus on spirituality.
Though Jaishankar was unable to attend the ceremony, he sent his video message.
“Independence should never be equated with neutrality. We will pursue what is right for our national and global interests without being intimidated into conformity. India will not permit others to impose vetoes on its decisions,” he asserted.
He reflected on past trends where progress and modernity were often seen as a repudiation of cultural heritage and traditions, stemming from either a preference for foreign models or discomfort with indigenous practices. However, he noted that as democracy evolves and authentic voices emerge, India is rediscovering its identity.
Jaishankar described India as a unique nation, a civilizational state that can only wield influence when it capitalizes on its cultural strengths globally.
“It is essential for the younger generation to recognize the value and significance of our heritage. This understanding must resonate at multiple levels, especially within society,” he said.
He highlighted that India stands at a pivotal moment; the last decade has proven its ability, confidence, and commitment to driving development across diverse sectors.
The nation has demonstrated that age-old issues such as poverty, discrimination, and lack of opportunities can indeed be addressed. On the international front, India has carved out a space as an independent power, dedicated to global welfare, particularly regarding the global south.
“Nevertheless, the constraints that have hindered us for so long still persist. There are perspectives and ideologies that tend to be overly pessimistic and demeaning of ourselves,” Jaishankar concluded. (Agencies)
