Gulmarg, Dec 28: The Chinar Corps of the Indian Army has responded to a call from civil authorities to assist in evacuating tourists stranded in the Gulmarg district due to heavy snowfall.
The severe weather conditions caused the road to Tanmarg to close, trapping numerous visitors and locals. In a swift response, Army personnel evacuated 68 individuals, consisting of 30 men, 30 women, and 8 children, while also providing meals, shelter, and medical support to a total of 137 tourists.
In a post on social media platform X, the Chinar Corps stated, “Chinar Warriors acted promptly to a distress signal from civil authorities to evacuate tourists caught in Gulmarg due to significant snowfall and road closures. We assisted the evacuation of 68 civilians, including 30 women, 30 men, and 8 children, and supplied hot meals, shelter, and medical care for 137 tourists.”

In a related incident, the Chinar Corps also facilitated the evacuation of a pregnant woman from Kulgam district amid the snowfall. The rescue team reached her location and provided urgent medical care, successfully transferring her to the Government Hospital in Yaripora.
“Chinar Warriors responded to an emergency call to evacuate a pregnant woman from Munad village, Kulgam. Despite the heavy snowfall, our rescue team arrived promptly and extended immediate medical assistance, evacuating her to Government Hospital, Yaripora,” the Chinar Corps noted in a social media update.

On Friday, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah reported that approximately 2,000 vehicles were trapped in Qazigund town in Anantnag after the region experienced its first snowfall of the season. The Chief Minister indicated that he had been in contact with the Deputy Commissioner of Anantnag regarding the situation, ensuring that heavy vehicles were being permitted to proceed while efforts to clear other stranded vehicles continued.
The scenic city of Srinagar welcomed the winter with its initial snowfall of the year on Friday, with additional districts such as Baramulla also experiencing fresh snowfall.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast isolated light rain and snow in Jammu and Kashmir until December 30. (Agencies)
