BHUBANESWAR, Feb 25: The Indian women’s hockey team delivered a remarkable performance on Tuesday by defeating the reigning Olympic champions, the Netherlands, in a thrilling shootout after the match ended 2-2 in regulation time.
The Netherlands took an early lead with goals from Pien Sanders in the 17th minute and Fay van der Elst in the 28th minute, leading 2-0 at halftime. However, India fought back strongly, equalizing the score with impressive strikes from Deepika in the 35th minute and Baljeet Kaur in the 43rd minute.
During the shootout, Deepika and Mumtaz Khan successfully converted for India, while Marijn Veen was the only scorer for the Netherlands. This victory came after India’s previous loss to the same opponents, 2-4, in the first leg on Monday. Throughout the home leg of the FIH Pro League, which spanned eight matches from February 15, India secured three wins, including this match, and suffered five losses, with one defeat occurring in a shootout.
