New Delhi, Dec 24: Amir Hussain Lone, a differently-abled cricketer and a beacon of inspiration for many, has expressed heartfelt thanks to Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, for creating “endless opportunities” for underprivileged cricketers in Jammu and Kashmir.
Amir is thrilled that his aspiration to establish a cricket academy for local children is finally on the verge of becoming a reality. After losing both arms in an accident at his father’s mill at the age of eight, he persevered and nurtured his passion for cricket. His distinctive playing style, which involves using his legs to bowl and his shoulder and neck to bat, showcases his determination. Encouraged by his teacher, Amir ventured into para cricket and has been playing professionally since 2013.
His dedication to the sport has led him to tournaments in Afghanistan, Nepal, and the UAE, though he has faced numerous obstacles, particularly in making a living from para cricket. Despite these challenges, Amir has stayed committed and now captains the Jammu and Kashmir Para cricket team.
His remarkable talent caught the attention of Gautam Adani earlier this year, who praised Amir’s relentless spirit in a post on X (formerly Twitter). Adani stated that the Adani Foundation would provide comprehensive support for Amir’s unique journey, acknowledging his struggle as a source of inspiration for many.
Overjoyed by the support from the Adani Foundation, Amir received financial assistance amounting to Rs 67.60 lakh to establish an indoor cricket facility, thereby taking a significant step toward his dream of opening a cricket academy for children in his village of Waghama in Anantnag.
Amir’s extraordinary spirit stems from an incident in childhood that ignited his determination to swim, sparked by observing ducks. This same enthusiasm drove him toward cricket, transforming him from a young boy on the periphery of the game to an internationally recognized para cricketer, and now a promising mentor for aspiring players in his community. His journey exemplifies the power of resilience and support in realizing one’s dreams.
In a recent social media post, Amir lauded Gautam Adani’s efforts to change the futures of budding cricketers from disadvantaged backgrounds in Jammu and Kashmir.
“I am elated to announce that Mr. Gautam Adani has opened doors to limitless opportunities for aspiring cricketers in Jammu and Kashmir. As many know, I am a differently-abled cricketer. Mr. Adani has previously offered not just financial support but also encouragement in my endeavors. His latest initiative is set to alter the destinies of many underprivileged cricketers in our region,” Amir shared on Instagram.
“With the Adani Foundation’s backing of Rs 70 lakh, we will be establishing a cricket academy in Anantnag, offering free professional training to aspiring cricketers across Jammu and Kashmir, including areas like Pulwama, Shopian, and Kulgam. With hard work and dedication, we aim to ensure that cricketers from our region make their mark at all levels, from local leagues to the national team,” he added.
Amir expressed that he and other cricketers will honor the trust placed in them and strive for success.
“Thanks to Shri Adani’s support, the dreams of budding cricketers from underprivileged backgrounds will finally come true. We are truly grateful for this opportunity and the trust placed in us, and we will work hard to achieve great success,” Amir stated.
The Adani Foundation reached out to Amir last month, expressing their commitment to help fulfill his dreams.
“I am pleased to learn that you are dedicated to creating a cricket facility in your village in Anantnag that will benefit aspiring cricketers, including differently-abled athletes. This is truly commendable,” wrote Priti G. Adani, Chairperson of the Adani Foundation, in a letter to Amir.
Reflecting on her previous correspondence, she noted that Gautam Adani has been inspired by Amir’s “courage and indomitable spirit” and is moved by how he has triumphed over adversity.
“The Adani Group, as always, stands beside you in this inspiring journey and has made a generous contribution to support your ambitions. The Adani Foundation is contributing Rs 67.60 lakh towards the development of the indoor cricket facility in your village, based on the project proposal you submitted,” she said.
Amir has been a professional cricketer since 2013, thanks to a teacher who recognized his talent and introduced him to para cricket. Amir bowls using his feet and bats by holding the bat between his shoulder and neck after losing both arms in a mill accident when he was eight years old.
Notably, legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar had the opportunity to meet Amir during his visit to Kashmir. Tendulkar kept his promise to connect with Amir after being impressed by a video showcasing Amir’s cricket practice in the region.
