BHUBANESHWAR, Jan 10: Union External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar praised the Indian diaspora for their significant contributions to India and the global community, showcasing their remarkable talent, creativity, commitment, and perseverance. He made these remarks during the valedictory session of the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas Convention held here on Friday.
Jaishankar noted that members of the diaspora have held esteemed political positions, led organizations, and excelled across various sectors, leaving a lasting impact on global society. He asserted that their extraordinary accomplishments not only bring pride to India and its people but also enhance the country’s relationships with other nations.
The Minister highlighted that the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards, recently presented by President Droupadi Murmu to selected individuals from the diaspora, serve as a recognition of their outstanding achievements.
He further mentioned that the recent days have offered valuable opportunities to delve into the diverse activities, interests, and aspirations of the diaspora. The overarching theme of “Contributing to a Viksit Bharat” is particularly relevant, with panels discussing important topics such as youth leadership, migrant skills, sustainable development, Nari Shakti (women’s empowerment), and cultural connections, which fostered insightful discussions.
Jaishankar expressed optimism that the dialogues and networking opportunities provided by the PBD platform have inspired all participants.
He pointed out that India has emerged as the fifth-largest economy and is on track to become the third-largest by the decade’s end. “Our contributions and responsibilities are increasing daily, alongside our external engagements,” he remarked.
He explained, “We approach global affairs with the dual outlook of ‘India First’ and Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam (the world is one family). When India thrives, so does one-sixth of humanity. Our efforts for global good also benefit our populace.”
Jaishankar also stated, “This is a time of greater interdependence, technological exchange, and talent mobility. In various ways, it is the diaspora that will shape our identity as a revitalized civilization.”
