Jammu/Srinagar, Dec 10: On Tuesday, the Jammu and Kashmir government granted approval for the creation of a three-member cabinet subcommittee to address concerns regarding the current reservation policy in the union territory.
This approval was communicated through an order from the General Administration Department.
As per the order, the subcommittee will include ministers Sakina Masood Itoo, Satish Sharma, and Javed Rana.
The subcommittee is tasked with presenting its findings to the council of ministers, which is led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
Last month, the Chief Minister mentioned that the Cabinet subcommittee would be established to engage with all relevant parties regarding the matter of reservation in government employment.
“Much discussion surrounds reservation. Our youth, particularly from the open category, feel deprived of their rights, while there are others now included in the reservation framework who do not wish to see their rights diminished.
“Thus, the Cabinet has opted to form a subcommittee comprising three ministers, instructing them to view the issue comprehensively,” he remarked.
Reservations have emerged as a significant topic in J-K following the Central government’s actions to include additional communities in the reserved category and to extend quotas in the UT over the last five years.
There is a growing backlash against the Centre’s plan to raise the reservation quota to 70 percent in Jammu and Kashmir.
This comes after recent announcements to implement a distinct 10 percent reservation for Paharis and other tribes, along with an increase of the OBC (Other Backward Classes) quota to 8 percent.
