JAMMU, Dec 29: The 270-km Jammu-Srinagar highway was reopened for traffic on Sunday after being closed for a day because of heavy snowfall, enabling stranded vehicles to continue to their destinations, officials reported.
However, several other crucial inter-district routes, such as Mughal Road, Sinthan Pass, Sonamarg-Kargil inter-UT road, and Bhaderwah-Chamba inter-state road, remain closed to traffic due to significant snowfall.
“The highway was reopened today after clearing the snow that had accumulated on various sections of the road,” stated a traffic official.
He also mentioned that efforts are being made to clear the stranded vehicles along the highway.
“Passenger traffic is now moving on the highway. Commuters are urged to maintain lane discipline, as overtaking could lead to congestion,” advised the J-K Traffic Police.
The police also warned drivers to be cautious as the roads are slippery between Banihal and Qazigund.
The Mughal Road, which serves as an alternative route connecting the Kashmir Valley from Poonch district in the Jammu region, is currently closed due to snow accumulation, as reported by officials.
Similarly, the Sinthan Pass in Kishtwar is also closed for vehicle movement owing to heavy snowfall.
Additionally, the Sonamarg-Kargil inter-UT road and the Bhaderwah-Chamba inter-state road have been shut down due to significant snowfall.
Officials indicated that efforts are ongoing to clear these routes and restore traffic.
