New Delhi, Jan 18: The Jammu Tawi Railway Station is being modernised to improve passenger comfort, safety, connectivity, and operational efficiency, according to a press statement released by Northern Railway on Saturday.
“In the future, Jammu Tawi Railway Station will be better equipped to manage train operations for the Jammu & Kashmir valley,” the statement noted.
“The remodelling of the Jammu Tawi yard is set to be completed by March 6, 2025,” it added.
Northern Railway (NR) mentioned that the yard remodelling is nearing completion, with non-interlocking work also expected to finish shortly.
“Remodelling the yard is a complex undertaking. Once it’s finished, we can accelerate the station redevelopment,” said Himanshu Shekhar Upadhyay, Chief Public Relations Officer at NR.
Upadhyay further revealed that the project is estimated to cost Rs 450 crore and aims to expand the platforms from three to seven, incorporating advanced ballastless track technology.
“The modernisation will facilitate smoother operations and enhance hygiene at the platforms. Each platform will feature washable aprons, promoting a cleaner environment,” he added.
Additionally, two new 12-meter wide foot-over bridges are being constructed to improve accessibility, along with a 72-meter wide air concourse to link all seven platforms.
“Key accomplishments include the construction of a new 4,500 sqm station building at the Narwal side and the upgrading of the main station building to 15,600 sqm, equipped with modern facilities,” Upadhyay stated.
“Besides boosting the station’s train handling capacity, the yard remodelling will replace outdated mechanical interlocking systems with advanced electronic interlocking, enhancing safety and efficiency among other improvements,” he noted.
