NEW DELHI, Jan 30: Javed Rana, the Minister for Jal Shakti, Forest, Ecology & Environment, and Tribal Affairs, engaged in in-depth discussions today with Chief of Army Staff (COAS), General Upendra Dwivedi, regarding various issues impacting the residents of Jammu and Kashmir, with a particular focus on those near the Line of Control (LoC).
The meeting featured targeted discussions aimed at addressing the negative impacts of LoC fencing on the livelihoods of the Gujjar-Bakerwal community. Efforts were made to identify solutions to alleviate the effects on their daily activities, especially concerning the emergency movement to and from villages adjacent to the LoC fencing.
To ensure smooth and uninterrupted movement for the Gujjar-Bakerwals, Rana stressed the need to relax regulations on traditional migration paths and access to grazing areas.
The meeting also thoroughly explored ways to enhance connectivity and facilitate the movement of individuals. Discussions included the maintenance and upgrading of all BRO roads in regions along the LoC and Pir Panjal.
It was highlighted during the meeting that integrating the roles of Gujjar-Bakerwals and other tribes is crucial for fostering peace and stability in J&K.
To promote the safety and welfare of local communities, the meeting included discussions on the de-mining of areas along the LoC that are inhabited or frequently travelled by residents, as well as establishing a robust emergency information system.
Additionally, the Minister proposed launching a recruitment drive/camps in remote districts of J&K and the creation of a Gujjar Regiment to aid in the recruitment of Gujjar youth into the Territorial Army.
To foster equitable development within the region, Rana also suggested collaborations to construct a Sports Stadium in Sagra Village and a Helipad in Dhana Shastar, Mendhar.
The meeting also covered the necessary arrangements to ensure the smooth movement of those with lands across the LoC fencing, as well as providing educational support and enhancing economic opportunities.
These discussions affirm the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by LoC inhabitants, promoting stability, and facilitating regional development.
