JAMMU, Dec 26: The Forest Department plans to set up three firewood depots in each district to adequately supply firewood for public and institutional needs. This initiative follows directions from Forest, Ecology & Environment Minister Javed Ahmad Rana, aimed at ensuring sufficient firewood availability throughout Jammu and Kashmir for the benefit of residents.
The Chief Conservator of Forests for Jammu and Kashmir will determine the site locations and the quantity of firewood based on regional requirements.
Minister Rana, who also oversees Jal Shakti and Tribal Affairs, has set a one-week deadline for making all depots operational, emphasizing efficient firewood distribution to help residents cope with the severe winter conditions.
As winter intensifies in Kashmir and the winter regions of Jammu, he highlighted the critical need for easy access to firewood. “This initiative is designed to provide essential support to the community during the challenging winter months,” he stated.
To enhance firewood distribution, Rana urged prioritization of areas with higher demand to alleviate public hardship. “Firewood availability should be ensured through local extractions whenever possible and, if necessary, through transfers between ranges and divisions,” the Minister asserted.
