SHIMLA, Jan 17: Union Minister of Science and Technology and Earth Science, Jitender Singh, announced on Friday that India plans to establish its own Space Research Station by 2035, noting the successful satellite docking achievements with the SpaDex system as a significant milestone.
During his visit to the Shimla IMD station, Singh emphasized the importance of the Bhartiya Antriksh Station for future satellite docking missions.
“Today marks the 150th anniversary of the India Meteorological Department, which was founded in 1875. It is gratifying to know that our capabilities in weather forecasting and disaster preparedness are on par with, or even exceed, those of other nations, as we are also sharing information globally,” Singh stated.
The establishment of the IMD was prompted after a devastating storm in the northeast, leading the British to create it. The Shimla station was among the first, serving as the IMD headquarters for an extended duration during British colonial rule, before relocating to Pune and finally to Delhi after independence.
Singh noted that the Shimla IMD station continues to hold significant value due to its unique topographical and geographical features, making it more relevant than other stations. (Agencies)
