Srinagar, Dec 10: The President of the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC), Tariq Karra, emphasized the importance of adhering to international conventions when addressing the situation of Rohingya refugees residing in Jammu during a press conference at the Congress headquarters in Srinagar.
Karra asserted that international conventions clearly outline the rights and provisions for refugees, stating, “Denying basic amenities to these individuals is a criminal act.” He further urged the government to ensure that the welfare of Indian Muslims is safeguarded amid discussions about the Rohingyas.
Highlighting a growing sense of Islamophobia, he expressed concern that political groups like BJP and RSS could exploit this situation to unjustly target Indian Muslims.
“The rights of legally residing Indian citizens must be protected, and the Congress party is committed to this issue,” he asserted. Karra’s remarks resonate with those of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who has previously called on the Indian government to clarify its position on Rohingyas while ensuring their fundamental needs are met.
Responding to a question regarding the Congress party’s potential participation in the Omar Abdullah-led government in Jammu and Kashmir, Karra stated, “No one has approached me in this regard.”
On the topic of the reservation policy, he noted, “Let the census be completed, and I will provide comments accordingly.”
The PCC convened a review meeting at its Srinagar headquarters on Tuesday, where it was decided how to enhance cultural and religious connections with society.
Karra also reaffirmed the party’s dedication to grassroots outreach aimed at bridging cultural and social divides, stating, “Our strategy is to engage with the people and raise awareness about the inclusive philosophy of the Congress party.” (Agencies)
