Srinagar, Jan 5: Authorities have apprehended a fraudster in Srinagar for deceiving a person by falsely claiming he could facilitate the release of the victim’s brother from police detention.
On Sunday, police reported receiving a written complaint from one Showkat Ahmad Sheikh, a resident of Zahid Pora-Hawal. The complaint stated that a conman, identified as Fayaz Ahmad Sheikh, who resides in Sheikh Colony, Makhdoom Sahib, had deceitfully extracted Rs 30,000 from him with the promise of securing his brother Sajad Sheikh’s release from police custody.
Sajad had been arrested concerning Case FIR No. 55/2024 under Sections 8/20 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
It’s essential to note that Sajad Sheikh, also from Sheikh Colony, Hawal, was legally detained by Police Station Nowhatta in this case.
Nonetheless, the suspect, Fayaz Sheikh, took advantage of the situation by falsely asserting he had the means to influence the release of the complainant’s brother, ultimately defrauding him of Rs 30,000.
Upon receiving the complaint, Police Station Nowhatta registered case FIR No. 01/2025 under Section 318 of BNS.
During the investigation, authorities successfully recovered the full amount from the accused.
The investigation is ongoing, as stated by officials.
