Srinagar, February 22: The Jammu and Kashmir Police have made history by filing their first-ever electronic First Information Report (e-FIR) after receiving a complaint via WhatsApp.
“In a significant advancement for digital policing, the Vilgam police station in Handwara has processed its inaugural e-FIR based on a complaint submitted through WhatsApp,” a police spokesperson stated.
The complaint was lodged by Imtiyaz Ahmad Dar, a driver for the State Road Transport Corporation and resident of Hanjipora in Kupwara.
As per the complaint, the incident took place earlier that day while Dar was traveling from Tarathpora to Srinagar.
He reported that upon reaching Vilgam, he was unlawfully detained and physically attacked by two individuals, Ashiq Hussain Bhat and Gowher Ahmad Bhat, both of whom live in Shehnipora, Vilgam, according to the spokesperson.
The alleged assailants inflicted bodily harm on him, it was noted.
In response to the incident, the Vilgam police promptly registered the e-FIR under sections 115(2) and 126(2) of the BNS, the spokesperson highlighted.
This pivotal development underscores the increasing incorporation of technology into law enforcement, establishing a benchmark for more efficient and accessible justice mechanisms in the area, the spokesperson concluded.
