SRINAGAR, Dec 16: On Monday, authorities announced the dismantling of a drug trafficking operation and seized assets obtained through illicit narcotics activities in the Qamarwari area of Srinagar district.
A police spokesperson detailed that as part of their intensified efforts against drug trafficking, Srinagar Police arrested two individuals linked to the drug trade and confiscated a significant amount of narcotics from their possession.
“During a checkpoint operation at Barthana Bund, a team from Police Station Parimpora stopped an Alto vehicle with the registration number JK01J 7081. The occupants, identified as Asif Ahmad Sheikh and Arif Ahmad Sheikh, both residents of Babapora Barthana, were apprehended,” the statement indicated.
Following the search of the vehicle, substantial contraband was discovered. “A case was filed under FIR No. 136/2024, invoking Section 8/20 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Parimpora. Both suspects were arrested, and the vehicle involved in the crime was seized.”
The police characterized the suspects as significant drug dealers engaged in extensive narcotics distribution aimed at the youth. It is noteworthy that one of the suspects, Arif Ahmad Sheikh, had previously been involved in another case, FIR No. 34/2023, registered under Sections 8/20, 21, 22, and 29 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Parimpora.
Investigations revealed that Asif Ahmad Sheikh had used proceeds from illegal drug sales to build a double-storey house in Babapora Barthana. The property was confiscated under Section 68 of the NDPS Act, with notifications sent to the appropriate authorities for further legal proceedings.
Srinagar Police encourages residents to report any incidents of drug dealing or criminal activity in their area. Citizens can either reach out to their local police station or dial 112 to share information.
The statement highlighted that tackling the drug issue is a shared responsibility, urging the public to collaborate with law enforcement in this vital mission. Police assured the community of strict and lawful action against those engaged in such illegal activities, aiming for a safer, drug-free society.
