On February 9 in Dehradun, Andhra Pradesh’s Jyothi Yarraji and Maharashtra’s Tejas Shirse captured their third consecutive gold medals in the women’s 110m hurdles and men’s 100m hurdles, respectively, setting new Games records on the second day of the athletics events at the National Games.
Both Shirse and Yarraji, who are national record holders in their categories, previously claimed gold in the 2022 and 2023 editions held in Gujarat and Goa.
The 25-year-old Yarraji, the current Asian champion and silver medalist from the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, completed the final in 13.10 seconds, surpassing her prior National Games record of 13.22 seconds established in 2023.
Her national record stands at an impressive 12.78 seconds, set in the same year.
West Bengal’s Moumita Mondal secured silver with a time of 13.36 seconds, while Tamil Nadu’s Nithya Ramraj earned bronze with a clocking of 13.60 seconds.
Meanwhile, 22-year-old Shirse recorded 13.65 seconds, improving his own previous National Games record of 13.71 seconds from 2023. He had achieved 13.84 seconds to win gold in the 2022 edition.
His national record is currently 13.41 seconds, established last year.
Tamil Nadu’s Manav Rajanarayanan took silver with a time of 14.03 seconds, and Kerala’s Muhammed Lazan claimed bronze with a time of 14.23 seconds.
Siddhanth Thingalaya, a former national record holder and gold medalist from the 2015 edition representing Maharashtra, unfortunately did not finish the final race.
Shirse and Yarraji have recently been competing in the indoor circuit abroad in the 60m hurdles, where both hold national records. (PTI)
