Srinagar, Jan 2: In response to the BJP’s assertion that the “Kashmir issue” was settled with the revocation of Article 370 five years ago, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah emphasized that a portion of the former state remains under Pakistani occupation.
“Let’s consider, for a moment, that the Kashmir issue on this side has been resolved. However, we must not overlook that there is another segment of Jammu and Kashmir across the line of control (Pakistan-administered Kashmir).
“When the BJP claims the Kashmir issue is conclusively resolved, does that imply the other side has also been addressed? The reality is that it has not,” he stated.
Abdullah was replying to a question about whether he believed the Kashmir issue was concluded following the abrogation of Article 370—a claim made by the BJP.
“Thus, the Kashmir issue persists, whether it’s on this side or the other; we can debate this, but the matter remains unresolved. We want a resolution,” he noted.
Leaders of the National Conference have often referred to a Parliament resolution from February 22, 1994, which expressed “deep concern” regarding Pakistan’s role in training terrorists in camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. This resolution called for Pakistan to relinquish its hold on the regions of Jammu and Kashmir that it has occupied through military action.
