Srinagar, Dec 4: The Kashmir Valley has witnessed a notable drop in night temperatures, with officials reporting Srinagar shivering at a frosty minus 2.0°C on Wednesday.
Tourist hotspots like Pahalgam, Gulmarg, and Konibal experienced even colder conditions, recording temperatures of minus 4.8°C, minus 3.5°C, and minus 4.5°C respectively, making them the coldest areas in the region.
The chilling cold wave continued to tighten its hold, with Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, registering a minimum temperature of -2.0°C during the night from Tuesday to Wednesday. The Meteorological Centre indicated this was 0.8°C lower than the seasonal average of -1.2°C.
Pahalgam in south Kashmir’s Anantnag district reported the lowest temperature at minus 4.8°C, a drop from the minus 3.3°C the previous night, marking 1.5°C below the normal range for this time of year.
The famous ski resort of Gulmarg also saw a further decline, recording minus 3.5°C compared to minus 2.4°C the day before. This temperature is 0.4°C below the usual for the valley of meadows this season.
Qazigund logged a low of 2.2°C, an increase from the previous night’s 0.5°C, but still 1.0°C below the norm for the gateway to Kashmir on Wednesday.
Kupwara’s temperature dropped to minus 1.2°C from 1.8°C the previous day, remaining 0.5°C above the normal for this frontier district of the Kashmir Valley.
The picnic spot Kokernag saw a slight increase in nighttime temperatures, registering 0.4°C compared to minus 0.2°C the night before, which was 1.0°C above seasonal norms for this area in south Kashmir.
The Met Office anticipates dry weather until December 7.
“A weak Western Disturbance (WD) may impact Jammu and Kashmir between December 8 and 9, potentially bringing light rain and snowfall in isolated higher areas,” they stated.
“Overall, no significant weather changes are expected until December 14,” the MeT office added.
