Srinagar, Feb 2: The plains of Kashmir were hit by sporadic rainfall, while some higher areas, including popular tourist spots such as Gulmarg and Pahalgam, experienced light snowfall overnight, according to officials.
During the night of Saturday into Sunday, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, along with other regions of the valley, received light rain. Some areas in Jammu also experienced light rainfall.
The ski resort of Gulmarg, located in the Baramulla district of north Kashmir, recorded 5.1 cm of snowfall, Pahalgam received 2.8 cm, and Kupwara experienced 2.5 cm of snowfall, as reported by the Meteorological Department in Srinagar.
Light snowfall was also noted in some of the higher catchments of the Kashmir Valley, including the Pir Panjal Range in southern Kashmir.
The MeT department forecasted generally cloudy weather, with the possibility of isolated light rain or snow, and thunderstorms across Jammu and Kashmir in the next 24 hours.
“Light snowfall and rain may occur from the evening of February 3 in isolated areas, while February 4 is expected to bring overcast conditions with chances of light to moderate rain/snow across many locations in Jammu and Kashmir.
An additional light spell of rain or snow at scattered places is anticipated early on the morning of February 5.
Temperatures at most weather stations remained above normal, with the exception of Gulmarg, following the snowfall.
In Srinagar, the minimum temperature recorded during the night improved to 2.5°C from 0.8°C the previous night, which is 3.1°C higher than the average for this time of year.
At the ski resort of Gulmarg, the temperature dropped slightly to -7.6°C, compared to -7.4°C, marking 0.2°C below the average for the valley during this season.
Pahalgam also experienced a temperature drop after snowfall, recording -2.6°C on Sunday, down from -0.4°C, while Kokernag registered sub-zero temperatures, dropping to -0.8°C from the previous night’s -0.8°C, according to the MeT office.
