New Delhi, Dec 10: In order for India to establish itself as a prominent sporting nation by 2036, it is essential to embrace grassroots development principles, establish a structured governance framework to foster talent, and create a supportive environment for young athletes to transition into professionals, stated Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday.
Mandaviya is currently formulating a three-pronged approach aimed at positioning India as a sports powerhouse by the 2036 Olympic Games, for which the country has submitted a ‘Letter of Intent’ to the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
“To advance sports in the nation, we must focus on sports development, governance, and ecosystem. Only by integrating these three elements can we ensure the prosperity of sports in India,” Mandaviya elaborated in a conversation with PTI.
“In terms of sports development, identifying talent is crucial. Our country is rich in talent. We will begin with the Khelo India School Games, where we will identify and nurture this talent,” Mandaviya detailed within the strategic framework.
“To cultivate this identified talent, children from each district—say 100 candidates—will be directed to district-level sports schools, whether private or government-run, including hostels or playgrounds.”
He also mentioned that qualified coaches would be brought on board to further develop this talent, after which athletes will compete in the Khelo India University Games to pinpoint the most promising individuals.
“Once this step is completed, they will advance to the Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG)… we will closely collaborate with respective federations but will not solely rely on them. Our primary focus is on recognizing and grooming talent for 2036,” the minister emphasized.
Athletes identified through KIYG will receive Target Olympic Podium funding once they are deemed ready for major international competition, he added.
Mandaviya remarked that the country possesses ample sports infrastructure, and the ministry is “reviewing” it to ensure effective utilization.
“We have plenty of sports infrastructure available. State governments, Public Sector Undertakings, national federations, and private sectors, along with the Central government, have invested in it. Currently, we are focused on analyzing this infrastructure to optimize its use. We have initiated efforts toward developing a comprehensive repository and identifying gaps in infrastructure,” he stated.
To foster a sports ecosystem that attracts more individuals to pursue sports professionally, the government will actively promote the Fit India Movement.
“Schools and colleges should engage more in sports discussions, necessitating more international events held in India… notably, the forthcoming Olympics in 2036. We are addressing these topics and making substantial progress,” he concluded. (PTI)
