Dubai, Feb 24: Former Sports Minister Anurag Thakur and BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla believe that Virat Kohli’s exceptional stability is crucial for the Indian team. They noted the superstar batsman’s remarkable composure under pressure during his stellar century against Pakistan.
Kohli’s outstanding unbeaten century was instrumental in India’s six-wicket victory over Pakistan in the Champions Trophy.
“Virat Kohli exemplifies how to perform under pressure and play for the nation. His remarkable innings has not only captivated many hearts but also secured the win for the country,” Thakur told PTI.
“When you analyze Virat’s innings, you’ll see that he wasn’t focused solely on scoring a century. His main goal was India’s triumph. He consistently rotated the strike, prioritizing the team’s needs over individual milestones.
“Kohli aimed to stay at the crease until the end and clinch victory for India. This demonstrates what sets him apart. For elite players like him, personal achievements are secondary to the team’s success,” he added.
Following India’s bowlers restricting Pakistan to a modest 241, Kohli forged pivotal partnerships with Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill, successfully chasing the target with 45 balls remaining.
“Kohli’s century was absolutely fabulous. His method of scoring and the stability he brings to the Indian team is unparalleled,” Shukla remarked.
“Shreyas and Gill played exceptionally well as well. The Indian team is back in top form, with all players fit and ready to take on Pakistan—and they did so with style. The team appears well-prepared for the finals,” he added.
Kohli’s century, his 51st in ODIs, featured seven boundaries.
“The whole nation eagerly awaited Virat’s century, and the way he played today was a superb performance,” said IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal.
“I believe IPL has significantly contributed to India’s impressive performances in ICC tournaments. Just look at the depth of our talent pool. IPL has transformed cricket not just in India but globally.
“This shift in mindset over the years has made cricket far more engaging and attracted new audiences, which is beneficial for the sport,” he concluded. (PTI)
