SRINAGAR, Dec 19: In a significant operation, five terrorists from Hizbul Mujahideen, including a notable commander, were gunned down during an encounter with security forces in Kulgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, as reported by officials.
Two personnel from the security forces also suffered injuries in the early morning operation, officials stated.
Following credible intelligence about the presence of suspected militants, security forces initiated a cordon and search operation at Kadder in the Behibagh region on Wednesday night.
The operation escalated into an encounter when the militants engaged the security forces with gunfire, prompting a retaliatory response.
Among the deceased terrorists is Farooq Ahmad Bhat, also known as Nali, a self-styled commander linked to several terrorist activities in South Kashmir.
The fatalities also included local militants Irfan Lone, Adil Hussain, Mushtaq Itoo, and Yasir Javaid.
Operations in the area persist, with police advising local residents to maintain a safe distance from the encounter zone for their safety.
