JAMMU, Mar 7: Sunil Sharma, the Leader of Opposition in Jammu and Kashmir and a BJP leader, has voiced his concerns regarding comments made by certain members about engaging in dialogue with Pakistan, drawing comparisons between the development in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (POJK) and Jammu and Kashmir, and appearing to “glorify” Pakistan.
In a letter addressed to J-K Legislative Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather on March 6, Sharma stated, “As the Leader of Opposition, I feel compelled to express my deep concern about specific remarks being made in this esteemed House. It has been noted that discussions within the Assembly have increasingly centered on issues like talking to Pakistan, juxtaposing the developmental circumstances in POJK with our Union Territory, and in some cases, making remarks that could be interpreted as glorifying Pakistan.”
Sharma emphasized that such statements threaten the sovereignty, integrity, and security of our nation, and are harmful to the wider interests of Jammu and Kashmir and our country.
He called upon the Speaker to take necessary action to limit discussions that undermine national interests, and requested the expunging of any remarks from the Assembly’s official records that might be seen as unparliamentary, inflammatory, or harmful to national integrity.
The BJP leader also alleged that “patriotic statements” made for the country’s benefit have been removed from the records, while certain narratives “favoring or glorifying Pakistan” continue to be retained.
These comments follow remarks made by J-K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who criticized BJP members in the Assembly regarding certain decisions made by the BJP-led government at the Center, asserting that it had divided Jammu and Kashmir into two Union Territories, diverging from the structure established by Maharaja Hari Singh.
Abdullah also referenced a recent statement from External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, questioning what is preventing the BJP government from “bringing back” Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. He stated, “When we consider the legacy of Maharaja Sahab, the most significant aspect was the state of Jammu and Kashmir as shaped by him. One section is under Pakistan’s control. Regarding this, the Foreign Minister claimed that we would reclaim it. So what is stopping us? Has anyone said not to bring it back? You (BJP members) target Congress here for what was left behind, but tell us what was actually reclaimed during the Kargil War? It was the perfect opportunity, given that Pakistan attacked… why didn’t you act then? Now, what are you waiting for?”
The National Conference leader further noted that while one part of Jammu and Kashmir is occupied by Pakistan, another region is under illegal occupation by China. “Why is that not discussed? If you’re talking about reclamation, why not also address the territory that is with China?” he asked. (AGENCIES)
