Kolkata, Feb 27: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of including fictitious voters from other states in the electoral lists with the “assistance of the Election Commission” (EC) and threatened to initiate an indefinite dharna in front of the poll body’s office if corrective actions are not implemented.
Speaking at a TMC conference, Banerjee also expressed concerns regarding Gyanesh Kumar’s appointment as the chief election commissioner, alleging that the BJP was attempting to sway the constitutional organization.
“The manner in which the BJP is altering the voters’ list with the Election Commission’s endorsement has become quite evident,” she asserted.
“If I could endure a 26-day hunger strike (during the anti-land acquisition movement in 2006), we could mobilize a movement against the Election Commission. If necessary, we can stage a dharna at the Election Commission’s office indefinitely to demand corrections in the voter rolls and eliminate fraudulent electors,” Banerjee stated.
She accused the BJP of employing “similar strategies in Delhi and Maharashtra by including voters from Haryana and Gujarat to sway elections.”
“In Delhi and Maharashtra, the BJP prevailed in elections by enrolling fake voters from Haryana and Gujarat. The party intends to bring these fraudulent voters from Haryana and Gujarat to manipulate elections in Bengal, knowing that they cannot win Bengal elections if they are conducted fairly,” she charged.
Banerjee further claimed that the BJP ensured the registration of fake voters from other states in several districts of West Bengal with the EC’s aid.
“We will pinpoint the fake voters who have infiltrated the voter list with the BJP’s assistance. We will not permit outsiders (BJP) to seize control of Bengal,” asserted the TMC supremo.
Moreover, Banerjee indicated, “What the BJP executed in Delhi (assembly polls) cannot be replicated in Bengal.” Her comments emerge amid escalating political tensions in the state, with both the ruling TMC and the opposition BJP preparing for a robust electoral contest. (PTI)
