SRINAGAR, Feb 8: In a landmark decision, a man charged with public drunkenness in Srinagar has been ordered by a court to complete three days of community service.
The individual, Mohammad Shafi Najar, a Srinagar resident, was found to be intoxicated and creating a disturbance, violating section 355 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Upon examining the circumstances, the court determined that instead of imposing a conventional penalty, Najar should engage in community service focused on cleanliness and hygiene at public locations in Bhagat Barzulla. He is required to report his progress to the local Mohalla president and the Station House Officer (SHO), who will then provide a compliance report back to the court.
This ruling establishes a positive precedent for addressing minor offenses through corrective actions instead of traditional punitive measures, according to the Srinagar police.
They noted that the new criminal laws encourage such alternative punishments as a way to rehabilitate individuals rather than simply punish them, aiming to inspire behavioral change and foster social responsibility.
