Banihal/Jammu, Feb 19: A 27-year-old man, identified as Mohd Abid from Thopal village in Batote, passed away at a health facility after becoming unwell while in police custody in Ramban district, Jammu and Kashmir, officials reported on Wednesday.
Following Abid’s death, Ramban District Magistrate Baseer-ul-Haq Choudhary mandated a magisterial inquiry to be completed within a week.
Authorities stated that Abid, reportedly a drug addict, was detained by police a few days prior, and began to feel unwell while in the lockup on Tuesday. He was then transferred to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Batote, where he ultimately succumbed.
His body is currently at the health centre and will be released to his family for final rites after necessary post-mortem and legal procedures are concluded.
The district magistrate has appointed Sub-Divisional Magistrate Rizwan Asgar to conduct a thorough inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Abid’s death.
“The inquiry officer is tasked with investigating the cause and circumstances leading to the death and determining the responsibility. A report is to be submitted within a week from the date this order was issued,” stated Choudhary in an order released on Tuesday evening. (Agencies)
