NEW DELHI, Dec 27: A 26-year-old man who self-immolated near the Parliament on December 25 has succumbed to his injuries at RML Hospital, officials reported on Friday.
Jitendra, a resident of Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh, attempted to set himself ablaze close to the new Parliament building, having doused himself in a petrol-like liquid.
The flames were quickly extinguished by security personnel stationed nearby.
He was subsequently admitted to RML Hospital and treated in the burn unit.
Initial investigations indicate that Jitendra’s drastic action stemmed from a dispute with another family in his village in Baghpat.
His family had been embroiled in two assault cases against another family, which led to his distress, according to police reports.
Hospital officials confirmed that he suffered severe burns, with 95% of his body affected, and passed away at 2:23 AM on Friday.
The cause of death was identified as burn shock resulting from inhalational injuries, related to extensive second-degree deep dermal burns.
A police spokesperson noted that after the autopsy, Jitendra’s body was handed back to his family. (PTI)
