SRINAGAR, Dec 26: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah stated today that providing continuous electricity to consumers in Jammu and Kashmir is contingent upon achieving 100 percent metering first. He explained to reporters that efforts are being made to enhance services for citizens, acknowledging that frequent power cuts are a consequence of overloading.
“People may be contracted for 4 bulbs, but many use 4 heaters in their homes, which causes overload and leads to unscheduled power cuts,” he noted.
He reiterated that consistent 24×7 electricity will only be feasible following complete metering.
The Chief Minister mentioned that sufficient measures are in place to improve winter conditions for residents, but with the region facing a drought-like situation, he expressed hope for early snowfall to help alleviate the circumstances.
He also highlighted that an increase in tourist activity is anticipated with snowfall, emphasizing efforts to position Jammu and Kashmir as a year-round tourist destination.
Responding to a question, Omar pointed out that J&K is a Union Territory and that some issues cannot be directly resolved, yet they are working to ensure that concerns are addressed.
Earlier, the Chief Minister led a meeting with the Srinagar district MLAs of the National Conference at his residence on Gupkar Road.
Attendees included Ali Mohammad Sagar, Shameema Firdous, Tanvir Sadiq, Salman Ali Sagar, Mushtaq Guroo, and Ahsan Pardesi, who discussed various issues affecting their constituents. The CM is conducting a series of district-wise meetings with party MLAs.
“We are highlighting issues like power shortages, road conditions, and other matters impacting the general public in our areas,” one of the MLAs stated.
During the meeting, the Chief Minister instructed the relevant departments to follow the published power cut schedules and optimize resources to lessen public inconvenience. Furthermore, he directed authorities to guarantee a steady water supply in response to the water shortages in Srinagar.
Despite the challenges posed by an extended dry spell and cold weather, Omar reassured the MLAs that every feasible measure would be pursued to assist residents.
Reflecting the concerns of the MLAs regarding hardships faced by traders, transporters, houseboat owners, hoteliers, craftsmen, and residents of Dal Lake, the Chief Minister emphasized that the Government is actively working to fulfill its commitments to all community segments.
Omar asserted that the Government is dedicated to reversing the developmental setbacks experienced over the past decade, focusing on significant investments in urban renewal, sustainable development, and the creation of urban employment opportunities.
