NEW DELHI, Dec 2: Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya criticized the AAP government on Monday for failing to implement the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, accusing it of prioritizing liquor sales over the health of Delhi residents.
The upcoming Delhi assembly elections are set for early next year, making the minister’s comments particularly significant as they come just a week after the Delhi High Court requested the AAP administration’s response to a petition from Delhi’s BJP MPs advocating for the execution of the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY).
During a press briefing, Mandaviya stated it was disappointing that states like Delhi and West Bengal have not adopted the scheme despite numerous appeals from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and correspondence from the Central government.
“While political disagreements may exist, the welfare of the public should take precedence in India’s federal democratic system for the benefit of all,” he remarked.
“The Government of India has reached out to the Delhi administration urging them to roll out the scheme, but the focus seems to be more on liquor sales and excise policies instead. They must prioritize the health of their citizens, which requires the implementation of this scheme in the national capital,” he added.
Mandaviya further mentioned that the Centre has broadened health coverage under AB-PMJAY to include all individuals aged 70 and above, regardless of their income level. (PTI)
