NEW DELHI, Jan 5: Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya spearheaded the ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ event in Porbandar, Gujarat, with Olympic medalist boxer Lovlina Borgohain offering her support from Guwahati.
More than 150 cyclists joined Mandaviya as he rode from the Municipal Arts & Commerce College to the Taluka School Cricket Ground at Upleta in Porbandar, covering a distance of 5 km within his Lok Sabha constituency.
Tokyo Olympics bronze medallist Borgohain participated in the cycling initiative via the SAI Regional Centre in Guwahati along with various renowned athletes from across the country.
Former Commonwealth heavyweight wrestling champion Sangram Singh also showed his support by participating in the event held in Delhi.
Since its launch by Mandaviya last month, the cycling initiative has taken place in over 2,500 locations throughout the country.
“Cycling is an effective solution to pollution and a great way to maintain health. Everyone should embrace cycling for fitness. Forming groups to cycle together is encouraged,” Mandaviya stated in a release.
Launched in 2019 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the ‘Fit India’ initiative aims to foster a healthy and active lifestyle among citizens.
The ‘Fit India Sundays on Cycle’ events are organized by the Sports Ministry in collaboration with the Cycling Federation of India (CFI) and MY Bharat.
These events are held simultaneously at SAI Regional Centres, National Centres of Excellence (NCOEs), and Khelo India Centres (KICs) nationwide. (Agencies)
