VADODARA, Dec 22: Smriti Mandhana showcased her exceptional form with a brilliant 91-run innings, helping India secure a commanding 211-run victory over a struggling West Indies team in the first Women’s ODI on Sunday. India set a total of 314 for nine, thanks to Mandhana’s innings and significant contributions from the middle-order, including Harmanpreet Kaur (34 off 23), Harleen Deol (44 off 50), Richa Ghosh (26 off 12), and Jemimah Rodrigues (31 off 19).
The West Indies faltered in their response, losing wickets to some questionable shots and were eventually bowled out for 103 in just 26.2 overs. Renuka Thakur had an impressive outing, claiming her first five-wicket haul in ODIs, leading to India’s largest win over the West Indies by runs. The second ODI of the three-match series will take place on Tuesday.
In a shocking start, Qiana Joseph was run out on the very first ball of the West Indies’ innings after struggling to complete a straightforward single, much to the disbelief of captain Hayley Mathews, who fell victim to Renuka just twelve balls later when she edged a wide delivery. The West Indies quickly tumbled to 11 for four when Titas Sadhu bowled Rashad Williams, and Renuka’s fourth wicket left them in dire straits at 34 for six after Shabika Gajnabi failed to connect with a full swinging delivery.
Before that, Mandhana, achieving her fifth consecutive 50-plus score, played a pivotal role in a solid 110-run partnership with debutant Pratika Rawal (40 off 69), who opened alongside her at a strike rate of 57.97, after India experimented with various batters to support Mandhana.
