SRINAGAR, Dec 7: On Saturday morning, a rare sighting of a Markhor, a wild goat known for its distinctive spiral horns, was reported in Noorkha village, located in Boniyar of Baramulla district, North Kashmir, according to officials.
Local residents first spotted the animal near a waterfall and promptly informed the authorities. This prompted a team of police and wildlife officials to investigate the area.
Officials indicated that this is the first recorded sighting of the Markhor in this locality, speculating that it may have wandered across the border.
Efforts are currently underway to capture the animal to ensure its safety, and locals have been advised to maintain their distance from the area of operation.
The Markhor is recognized as a rare and endangered species, native to the mountainous regions of Central and South Asia, including countries such as Pakistan, Afghanistan, India, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. (KNO)
