LUCKNOW, Dec 22: Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati on Sunday challenged the authenticity of the Congress’ protests regarding the supposed “disrespect” shown to B R Ambedkar in Parliament. She criticized the party for having previously overlooked and diminished his contributions to the nation, describing their actions as “politics of sheer deceit and self-interest.”
Furthermore, she directed her criticism towards the BJP, alleging that both the ruling party and Congress are united in their approach to exploit Ambedkar’s legacy for electoral gains.
“Indeed, it was only under a BSP government that saints, gurus, and eminent figures from the Bahujan Samaj, including Baba Saheb, received the respect and recognition they deserved, which these casteist factions struggle to accept,” the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister remarked in a series of posts on X.
In response to the confrontations within and outside parliament during the winter session, the Congress has announced plans to stage protest marches against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of “insulting” Ambedkar through his remarks last Tuesday, and will launch a weeklong campaign addressing the issue.
Shah has countered by asserting that the Congress has misinterpreted his statements regarding Ambedkar in the Rajya Sabha, labeling it a smear campaign following discussions on the Constitution that depicted the opposition party as “anti-Ambedkar and anti-reservation.”
Mayawati took to “X” on Sunday to express, “There is significant outrage across the nation regarding the disrespect shown to the esteemed Baba Saheb Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar by Shri Amit Shah in Parliament. Meanwhile, the greed of the Congress party, which has historically overlooked and harmed his contributions to the nation, exhibits pure deceit and self-serving politics.”
She alleged that all parties are conspiring to undermine the BSP to hinder the progress of Ambedkar’s supporters.
Focusing her attack on the Samajwadi Party, Mayawati stated, “Specifically, the SP has callously altered the names of districts, institutions, and public welfare programs out of spite.” (PTI)
