New Delhi, Dec 19: Sources from the Ministry of External Affairs indicated on Wednesday that there have been some erroneous reports in foreign media regarding a resolution presented in the United Nations General Assembly. They clarified that this is an annual resolution submitted by Pakistan in the Third Committee.
The resolution was adopted without a vote. Additionally, the sources noted that the document does not reference Jammu and Kashmir.
“We have observed misleading foreign media accounts concerning a resolution in the UNGA. This is an annual resolution introduced by Pakistan in the Third Committee. It was approved without voting and does not mention Jammu and Kashmir,” said MEA Sources.
The Third Committee of the General Assembly, convened for its seventy-ninth session, is chaired by Zephyrin Maniratanga, the Permanent Representative of Burundi.
As in earlier sessions, a significant portion of the Committee’s work will revolve around examining human rights issues, which includes reports from the special procedures of the Human Rights Council established in 2006. The Committee will engage with special rapporteurs, independent experts, and chairs of treaty bodies and working groups as mandated by both the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly.
The Committee addresses matters concerning women’s advancement, child protection, indigenous rights, refugee treatment, and the promotion of fundamental freedoms through the eradication of racism and racial discrimination, alongside the right to self-determination. Moreover, the Committee examines critical social development issues such as youth, family, aging, persons with disabilities, crime prevention, criminal justice, and international drug control.
The UN General Assembly (UNGA) serves as the primary policy-making body of the Organization. Comprising all Member States, it offers a distinctive platform for multilateral dialogue on a comprehensive range of international challenges as outlined by the United Nations Charter. Each of the 193 Member States enjoys an equal vote.
The Assembly convenes for regular sessions annually from September to December, and as necessary thereafter. It deliberates on specific issues through dedicated agenda items or sub-items, culminating in the adoption of resolutions. (Agencies)
