SRINAGAR, Dec 11: Officials reported an improvement in minimum temperatures across Kashmir, particularly in the higher altitudes, on Wednesday. The Meteorological Department has predicted some wet weather in scattered locations.
Thanks to the overcast skies, night temperatures have risen throughout the valley, including Srinagar; however, the minimum continues to stay below freezing across Kashmir.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus three degrees Celsius, an increase from the season’s low of minus 5.4 degrees Celsius the night before.
The renowned ski resort of Gulmarg reported a low of minus six degrees Celsius, up by three degrees from the prior night.
Pahalgam, which acts as the base camp for the annual Amarnath Yatra, saw a low of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius, a significant rise from the previous night’s minus 8.4 degrees Celsius.
Qazigund, the entry point to Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 4.4 degrees Celsius, while Kupwara in north Kashmir registered a minimum of minus 4.5 degrees Celsius, and Kokernag in south Kashmir noted minus two degrees Celsius.
Although the higher altitudes of Kashmir experienced snowfall between Sunday and Monday, the plains saw no snowfall.
Doctors have recommended that people, especially children and the elderly, take precautions and remain indoors.
The weather office anticipates a primarily dry spell in Kashmir until December 18, with chances of light snowfall in isolated spots in the higher elevations on Wednesday.
From Wednesday night through Thursday morning, there is the possibility of light rain or snow in various locations, particularly in the higher reaches, due to an incoming western disturbance affecting Jammu and Kashmir, according to the MeT Office.
While Kashmir endures cold conditions, the valley is preparing for the 40-day harshest winter phase starting on December 21.
