New Delhi, Mar 2: Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated on Sunday that the Modi administration is unwavering in its pursuit of justice against drug traffickers who ensnare the youth into the destructive cycle of addiction for monetary gain.
In a post shared on X, Shah affirmed that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government is committed to combating the drug crisis with relentless and thorough investigations aimed at establishing a “drug-free Bharat”.
He highlighted that through a comprehensive investigation strategy that operates from both the grassroots level and the top echelons, 29 drug traffickers have been convicted in 12 separate cases across India.
This achievement underscores the effectiveness of the “bottom to top” and “top to bottom” methodologies utilized by the government, as noted in an official statement.
In alignment with the Modi government’s zero-tolerance stance on drugs, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has reported this major success, the statement mentioned.
The 12 cases include the seizure of 23.859 kg of charas at Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, in 2019, resulting in the arrest and 14-year sentencing of three individuals.
In July 2022, the NCB apprehended two vehicles in Mandsaur, Madhya Pradesh, seizing 123.080 kg of ganja, leading to four arrests with each receiving a 12-year rigorous imprisonment sentence alongside a fine of Rs 2 lakh.
Last year, in the Chandigarh Zone, NCB officers intercepted a parcel at DHL Express in Ludhiana, containing two hockey sticks concealed with 438 grams of opium.
The two suspects involved were sentenced to three years of imprisonment by a Punjab court for their attempt to transport the opium to Canada.
In a separate incident, the NCB arrested an individual at Chandigarh Railway Station in 2021 for possessing 390 grams of charas.
The accused was subsequently charged, and following the investigation, a special court handed down a six-month jail sentence.
In June 2021, the NCB detained a Zimbabwean woman upon her arrival at Cochin International Airport, resulting in the discovery and confiscation of 2.910 kg of heroin in her luggage.
She was arrested, and a court in Ernakulam sentenced her to 11 years imprisonment.
In January 2018, the NCB seized 450 grams of charas in Dehradun, which led to the arrest of one person who was sentenced to one year in jail.
In 2021, the NCB confiscated 1.950 kg of charas from two individuals who were later arrested, receiving a 10-year prison sentence from a court in January 2025.
Additionally, in February 2021, the NCB seized 681.8 kg of ganja in Ranga Reddy district of Telangana, with eight individuals arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison for drug trafficking.
In September 2021, a truck in Seoni, Madhya Pradesh, was intercepted by the NCB, leading to the seizure of 152.665 kg of ganja. Four people were arrested and sentenced to 15 years of rigorous imprisonment by a special court.
In July 2020, a sizeable haul of 1,301 kg of ganja was seized from a truck in West Bengal, resulting in the arrest of two suspects, one of whom was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
“These convictions illustrate the NCB’s commitment to ensuring successful prosecution in its court cases,” the statement concluded.
The home ministry emphasized that under Shah’s leadership, the NCB is diligently working to achieve Prime Minister Modi’s vision of a drug-free India by 2047. (Agencies)
